OpenForests & ARARA: The Digital MRV Blueprint for Amazon Restoration Finance

The Challenge: Restoring the Amazon

The Amazon rainforest plays a critical role in global climate regulation, but it is under threat from deforestation, leading to devastating consequences such as droughts, fires, and climate instability. Smallholder farmers and Indigenous stewards are the frontline guardians of the forest, yet they lack upfront finance to restore and protect these vital ecosystems.

While climate finance is available, it often fails to reach the people who need it most. For large-scale restoration to succeed, a transparent, verifiable system is essential—one that can connect investors with restoration efforts on the ground.

ARARA’s vision: A bridge for Amazon restoration

ARARA aims to be the engine driving climate finance for the Amazon by creating a digital-financial platform that links restoration activities directly to income for smallholders and Indigenous communities. The platform will provide verifiable proof of ecological restoration through an MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) system, ensuring that every dollar invested leads to measurable, impactful change.

OpenForests’ role: Digital MRV and platform design

OpenForests was engaged as a strategic partner to design the digital MRV backbone for ARARA’s platform. Our consulting focused on transforming ARARA’s concept into a viable, investment-ready digital product capable of driving Amazon restoration at scale.

Our objectives for ARARA’s digital platform:

  • Platform conceptualization: Designing a 6-step smallholder journey and the flow of money and credits.
  • MRV architecture: Creating a transparent system integrating ground-truthing and satellite data.
  • Investment readiness: Developing app mockups and a financial framework to attract funding for the Amazon restoration MVP.

The Solution: designing transparency in Amazon regeneration

OpenForests applied its geo-ecological and software expertise to build a platform that ensures transparency, trust, and investor confidence.

1. Verifiable action on the ground

  • Smallholder onboarding: Local ARARA Shops verify farmers and their land parcels through a digital ID system, ensuring accurate data.
  • Restoration tracking: The system tracks activities like tree planting and soil restoration, ensuring that all actions are recorded.
  • Ground-truthing: Farmers upload geotagged photos using a mobile app, verifying key milestones in the restoration process. This data is combined with satellite monitoring to provide complete traceability.

2. Advanced MRV and credit issuance

  • Satellite integration: Each land parcel is linked to biomass data layers (Kanop, Planet Labs), which track restoration progress using LiDAR, radar, and optical satellites.
  • Credit trigger: Verified biomass gains trigger the creation of ARARA Ecological Credits, which can be sold to investors.
  • Financial security: The system ensures that investors are repaid through the sale of credits, reducing financial risk and ensuring sustainable capital flow for restoration.

The Impact: Scaling Amazon regeneration

Through our strategic work, ARARA is now positioned to:

  • Launch the ARARA MVP and establish the first ARARA Shop.
  • Pilot the platform with smallholders and Indigenous partners, demonstrating real-world success.
  • Scale the platform and expand the ecosystem with new types of credits and remote sensing capabilities.
