Biodiversity monitoring for NbS projects

OpenForests is excited to partner with biometrio.earth, to integrate advanced biodiversity data into explorer.land, the transparency hub for nature restoration.

This collaboration will strengthen the ability of nature restoration projects to transparently track, monitor, and communicate their impact on biodiversity at a global scale.

Because nature restoration is not just about carbon and planting trees.

Biodiversity is vital for the health of ecosystems and the planet. Yet, global wildlife populations have declined by an average of 69% since 1970. Transparent and real-time biodiversity monitoring is crucial to reversing this trend.

By combining biometrio.earth’s data with explorer.land, we enable projects to visualize biodiversity metrics, track their progress, and share their outcomes with clarity and accountability. This approach aligns with the growing demand for reliable environmental data, as emphasized by frameworks like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

Monitoring biodiversity, witnessing life

Key features of biometrio.earth’s data that can be integrated into explorer.land include:

  • Ecosystem Condition Index (ECI): This index developed by biometrio.earth describes the overall quality of an ecosystem, measuring both biotic (living) and abiotic (physical) characteristics. By adding ECI as a custom layer, projects can easily cross-reference geospatial information, such as tree cover, fire alerts, and more, to gain deeper insights into ecosystem health.
  • Acoustic Sensors & Camera Traps: These technologies can be integrated into geolocated news posts, enriching storytelling and enhancing transparency. By sharing images and acoustic recordings, projects can engage audiences with real-time, impactful visuals and data, further promoting interactive and transparent communication.

Together, we are joining forces for nature restoration projects to report on impact and promote greater transparency in biodiversity conservation.
