Controversial Carbon Credits

Carbon credits represent an important path to sequestering greenhouse gases. Carbon sequestration that can not be avoided can be offset by buying an equivalent amount of credits. Though, here it already starts to become controversial. What are non-avoidable emissions? Furthermore, what is the quality of the carbon credits offered in the offsetting market? Are they really additional?
